Carnegie Mellon Racing Special Projects
The Formula SAE competition challenges student teams to build the most effective open-wheeled cars that they can in a single year. To be at the top of the field means investing time and effort into transformative strategic goals. During my final season with Carnegie Mellon Racing, I served as the Special Projects Captain for our structural division, leading the team's R&D division focusing on composites design and manufacturing. I established and mentored a team of seven underclassmen who will be future leaders in implementing the team's first carbon fiber monocoque chassis, which is a huge milestone for the team.
Through a series of 'special projects' on our 2023 vehicle package ranging from driver interface systems such as the seat, pedals, and steering wheel, to aerodynamic systems such as our bodywork and sidepods, I led the team in testing and implementing new designs and manufacturing methods. Additionally, I oversaw new workflows for composites simulation and mechanical testing on the team, delivering unprecedented confidence in our carbon fiber components. It was a great opportunity to learn a lot about leading design, engineering, and manufacturing teams and driving technical changes in an organization.
Below are some overview images from different projects throughout the season (some successes, some failures😊). The work is ongoing and diverse, so reach out if you would like to hear more about it!
